Default Why MeeGo? Why not touch UI frame work on top of Ubuntu?

Hi,
Why MeeGo? Why not touch UI frame work on top of Ubuntu?
That is the question I have in my mind since from many days. There are so many different variations of Linux Re:http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06...cles_part_one/ and MeeGo seems one more to be added to this array.
Apologies if I hurt anyone's feeling but I just want to come out of this confusion before I embark on developing application on MeeGo. I am seasoned mobile application developer, engaged since from the days of Palm OS.
Thanks,
Datha

The answer to my question will likely an answer your question. How fast do Jolicloud and Ubuntu boot up? 40 seconds? More?

Aside from that aspect MeeGo is taking Linux off the desktop and really put Linux into the position of 'competitor'. MeeGo takes it's lightweight core from Moblin and will be using Qt's powerful object oriented libraries to expand that core into multiple devices. This mindset and framework beats the pants off Apple and Google. Apple has the iPhone OS and then they have Mac OS X. MeeGo is Linux is Fedora is Linux is Ubuntu is Linux is Gentoo is Linux .... and the Linux power gauge grows. Thankfully I have not heard much of Google's Android for netbooks ... it was terrible and they focused on the Phones software. Good choice for them.

Another reason, whether you like this fact or not, is that Ubuntu development is kinda kooky / weird. The developer for the Eeebuntu OS was pretty fed up with Ubuntu constantly breaking stuff.

And for a greater reason why MeeGo is not based on any one Linux distro ... Intel and Nokia have total freedom to pick, choose and modify what goes into MeeGo. They wont have an overseer or an outside dependency. While this creates a greater workload it also allows for more specific code and more professional work.

I am sure there are other reasons.

EDIT: Just thought of one. If you are really stuck on being a Debian user ... have no fear. A community member is working on a deb port of MeeGo.

Well for me, it is the difference between my machine acting fast, or still being slower. I have a limited capacity netbook, a ASUS 900A, and with meego, i dig that machine with Meego on it. But before Meego, with every ther OS, the speed and/or screen real estate was too much of a compromise, and the Asus mostly collected dust.

But, I hear you to. On my more powerful and capable netbook, MSI Wind, I gave up on the struggle to get Meego installed.

Hmmm.

I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix in my Toshiba nb205, so it booted about 20 secs, so MeeGo takes more than 2 minutes to boot. I changed becasue Ubuntu didn't install all the hardware.

Regards,

Oscar.

I deffo would give MeeGo a try on my ion powered netbook/subnotebook but awww nvidia isnt supported so far. I am a little unhappy with my current Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 because i prefer a more informative and minimal design, although UNR has a nice clutter menu.

But I see far more future for the MeeGo interface than the upcoming Unity. Just think on 9" netbooks with 1024x600 size and the unity dock on the left, i dont want to scroll even 1024px websites...

That sounds like a major problem. Fast boot is an extension of Moblin. That is where it was conceived and has extended to all of the netbook OSs.

I think the "Why MeeGo?" question is important (especially against Android, and to a lesser extent, other Linux distributions).

I think that question, followed by a brief, clear but complete answer, needs to be prominent on MeeGo.com.

Yes, why were rpm/zypper chosen as a packing system for Meego, vs. dpkg/apt? (Also, given Moblin's roots in Fedora, why suddently the choice of Suse's zypper?).

I tried tried UBR and MeeGo / Moblin a few times on my Dell Mini 9. Ubuntu felt slow and laggy and power consumption (measured with a power meter!) was pretty high. MeeGo booted faster, is more responsive and has a lower power consumption.

Only downside: some software (e.g. codecs) are missing but if you install the Community Repo that's no problem any more.

That's why I use MeeGo.
