Default And the best 10" MeeGo netbook is...

... the HP Mini 5102?

(or do you have a better alternative?)

I bet this is also a story crossing the mind of others in this forum:

It's time to replace my primary (Ubuntu) laptop and I'm willing to go for netbook to get MeeGo as my default working environment (while looking forward to the day MeeGo powers my handset too).

The budget is not the big worry but there are some requirements:

- 10" inches (or smaller, only for an exceptional reason and complying to the following points).

- Good hardware support (Broadcom wifi hack is ok). I'm happy testing the software and filing bugs about it but my days spent getting basic things to work on Linux are gone.

- Powerful enough. I'm a simple user: browser with many tabs, email app, office stuff every other day, some multimedia and streaming, sometimes dedicated use of Gimp or similar...

- Good display, good resolution and supported option to connect to a big screen. Most of the time I'm working with the laptop closed, connected to external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

The rest is probably just small details to deal with.

Does it reconnect when coming out from suspend? My Dell w/Broadcom need manual reconnection while Intel based laptop works just perfect.

OK, Dell will reconnect eventually, but it takes real ages to make it happen.

First, a disclaimer is in order when advertising employers products: I work for Intel.

It's pretty easy and not expensive to switch to a high quality wireless chip that is supported out of the box: most netbooks have easily accessible wireless chips and the price should be ~20€. I found this operation both made my life easier (as wireless actually works) and made my bug reports better.

And the advertisement in case someone is looking for specific advice: The chip I've been happy with is 4965AGN.

Thanks for the tips to bypass/fix the wlan problem.

If someone knows a strong alternative to the HP Mini 5102 that would have the wifi supported out of the box, please share your recommendation.

My MSI Wind U130 seems to be working out of the box.

I don't know the specifics of MeeGo compatibility, but I was running the previous version (HP Mini 5101) with Ubuntu as my primary work computer for six months. Worked quite nicely, though at times WiFi was flaky and I would've wished for better battery life.

Despite that, quite nice, compact hardware.

FWIW: don't get a Samsung n220. The realtek card needs firmware to get running, and while that is perfectly possible to achieve, it's a pain in the *** to have to do it.

(excuse my french!)
