What will happen to meego.com and other meego sites?
I just moved here from maemo.org... and looks like will move again...

the MeeGo name is dead, that's for sure;
the MeeGo domain squatter will be disappointed, but the guy had insider info:
he tried to sell everything last Saturday ...

But in the new project, a lot of things will be the same as they were in the MeeGo project
Threat or promise?

The optimist in me thinks it's good there are new partners coming along. The pessimist in me thinks Tizen sounds silly and this reboot will once again put the project (whatever the "project" is) into vaporware status for the next two years at least. Sad to see Qt is not backed anymore but it's probably no surprise as it's seen as a Nokia thing.

The MeeGo name is tainted, that's for sure so no great loss, but the change to the stack - at the very least losing Qt - is something that I think will upset/annoy/frustrate a lot of people and make Tizen - which is a lame name, even more so than MeeGo - far less interesting to a lot of community members/developers.

Intel and/or Samsung need to explain their reasons for not continuing with Qt on Tizen. If it was down to cost, or resources, then the future for Tizen looks pretty bleak from the outset.

It was the one Nokia technology that still retained some credibility despite Nokia's best efforts.

Perhaps this is Intel's revenge on Nokia, as it's going to make attracting Qt developers to help shift those billion Symbian handsets that little bit harder when their is no high-end future platform planning to use Qt. Qt is now a dead end as far as mobile development is concerned. If you were planning on learning Qt, you wouldn't bother now - just jump straight to Android or iOS development.

Yes, think WebOS. But without the cool name.

The smell of Nokia still lingers at MeeGo, would be my guess. Everytime someone covers MeeGo in the media, it's quoted as "Nokia's failed Linux experiment, MeeGo, blah blah". Time to move on, and leave the MeeGo brand disaster behind (and also Nokia, by implication - fresh start).

Best we can tell there is no Qt support in Tizen - from #IRC:

Quote:
[28/09/2011 08:14:41] <Milhouse> DawnFoster: Can you confirm the status of Qt?
[28/09/2011 08:15:38] <alterego> DawnFoster: Qt?
[28/09/2011 08:16:24] <DawnFoster> we'll have some transition plans for Qt
[28/09/2011 08:21:05] <alterego> DawnFoster: when you say "transission plans for Qt" do you mean a few docs saying how easy it is to write HTML and JS, or do you mean we will have Qt available on that platform?
[28/09/2011 08:21:43] <DawnFoster> honestly, we're still working on those details
[28/09/2011 08:22:13] <DawnFoster> we will have some way to transition, but exactly how is still tbd
If there were plans for Qt in Tizen, the answer would have been simple.

From developer point of view, actually nothing changed. Qt is still development environment that covers all desktop major operating systems and majority of mobile operating systems, as example MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan, Symbian and Android. You can develop with Qt today and you have hundreds in millions devices out there that could run it. Even Nokia changes it's product portfolio, it does not mean at all that Qt is dead or even declining. After Harmattan there will be coming "Next billion". I can't say anything new from Next billion but repeat what has been said, it is based on Qt and it will target to large volume mass market. Regardless what decision Tizen does with Qt, are they keeping it for compatibility or are they least not closing door for others than HTML5 applications, Qt will remain strong and will cover most of platforms.
