Default Gary Birkett RIP

Hi all,

It is with sadness that I have to report that I heard from Gary's wife today that he died last night. I don't have much by way of details.

Gary was important to me in my connections to Maemo. I recall sitting on a bus on the way to Barcelona airport dreaming up Maesheep. And Gary escorting me back to my room after one too many Guinesses in Dublin with perfect chivalry.

I shall miss him - and his dreams with liqbase and liqflow.

Gary was such a great person. So sorry to hear that news.
A big loss for Maemo and MeeGo and our community.

RIP Gary

That is sad news indeed. An N900 was my first Maemo phone and Gary was demoing Maemo on the first day I saw one in person (at a UK pre-launch event).

He seemed enthusiastic and helpful; the sort of person that any community would like to have around.

Rest in peace Gary. Thoughts are with Tracy and the kids.

It's people like lcuk who make me wake up in the morning and run to the office to work, without needing any coffee and regardless of what the blogosphere headlines want to mumble about.

Passionate, optimistic, helpful and humble people like lcuk make communities and projects unique. Now my thoughts go for his wife and family. I just learned they had recently a second kid - and any help to go over this bump will be surely welcomed.

Gary was the first Maemo person I met. I still clearly remember myself approaching him at the hotel doors, looking for a person with a gadget I could recognize. The warm welcome he gave me that morning I'll never forget.

He was the kind of person that made communication between opposite point of views possible. He always tried hard to help, even when he had no interest to do so, and did so in the most patient way unimaginable -- with more patience than most of us, always with his incredible love for everyone else's pet projects.

The world already feels sadder now.

I never met lcuk in person but he took an interest the work I was doing and in the Cambridge meet ups we were trying to get started.

He put a good word in for me with qgil to get some nokia kit to hack on.

He always said \o on IRC and showed an interest in the latest or potential port of MeeGo.

He did not need to do any of that, he just did it because he cared passionately about the community.

A top guy, he is missed here

I am so sorry. I've just seen Kathy's email to the lists and I'm profoundly saddened to hear this news; he was a talented, helpful and friendly person even to relative strangers like me. Sad, sad day.
