The problem with their patent argument is that nothing needs to be proven, whatsoever, for a patent lawsuit to cost a lot of money. Also, much like the scuffle on maemo.org over Chromium I am baffled that a non-contributor, non-owner would be concerned. But then, this is just more examples of lawyers and patents stifling innovation...

thenn I say we should go back use deb and scrachbox also I dislike the OBS stuff anyway. I may misunderstand OBS infrastructure but as I undeerstand it OBS is using central "buildserver for all apps" to me it seems maemo did work better. just compile yourself and upload to the repo? or do I misunderstand it totally. But to me it seems like me asuser gets more control with lmaemo?

I maybe wrong here... just my...

I think meego.org would be as problematic as meego.com in legal terms. I've come to realize that the formeego.org domain, while initially more clunky, is much more suitable for a community repository / hub. It is clearly not under the Linux Foundation and the MeeGo official branding, but it just as clear what distribution it is targeting. It is the old problem of having a copyrighted name in your open source project that we ran into in Maemo with things like "Maemo Mapper". You're allowed to say your app is "for MeeGo" but you aren't allowed to call it something like "MeeGo Mapper". You have to say "Mapper for MeeGo"

Well handled, lbt and the MeeGo community team.

I look forward to seeing the first apps and distributions appearing in apps.formeego.org soon!

(PS: Any chance of seeing a Harmattan "open kernel" package that disables Aegis in those repos?)

Based on history, I would suspect far more patent violations in closed/commercial apps than anything developed by individuals here...

The LF is on the wrong side of history.

meego.net seems to be free so far.

I'll publicly place my vote here. I strongly prefer the last choice on the wiki:

Move all MeeGo infrastructure to formeego.org and away from LF

Although I would rephrase it to, "Move all community MeeGo infrastructure to formeego.org and away from LF."

I think the point of the last option is for the "MeeGo community" to move , wholesale, to formeego.org. lbt's definition of that might be wider than yours ;-)

I think we will have to be prepared to block some apps from being available in the US if there are complaints. Maybe we should prepare a this is why we can't have nice things page for those

For example Chromium on Maemo Downloads was pulled completely, while it would've been OK for the rest of the world

I think you may be right.

But I think I might not be against even that wider definition, if it refers to "MeeGo community activity not sanctioned by the Linux Foundation". This includes device forums, apps, wiki... all community activity that isn't related to the generic MeeGo platform hosted by the LF.

It looks like the LF wants a white list as opposed to black list app policy. That's very problematic and could severely damage MeeGo.

EDIT: it may or may not be relevant, but I see that Ibrahim of the LF just linked up with IP counsel Jilayne Lovejoy on LInkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jilayne-lovejoy/36/120/b65
