Exclamation [INFO] About porting Meego into others phones / supported devices / Nokia phones

Many people have asked questions about if some device is supported by Meego, or if there is a project about porting Meego in some device, or will Nokia port Meego to some of their devices.

In order not to repeat the same answers, I started this thread to inform those people about the currently supported devices and porting projets. This thread will also give reasons why Meego have no chance to be ported to some devices.

People may also ask questions about supported devices here.

The current supported devices are :
* Nokia N900
* AAVA developer phones
* ST-Ericsson U8500 developement platform
* N950 / N9 (Meego Harmattan, or Meego CE)

There is also a community port project to the Beagle Board and Panda Board developement platform.
http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/Meego_on_B...d_from_scratch
http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/OMAP4_Panda

Please note that Meego does not run perfectly on those devices, and the support is only for developing apps and the system. It is NOT for end users.
Please visit this page of the Wiki to see the supported devices :
http://wiki.meego.com/Devices#Handsets

There are community porting projects on various devices :
* Nokia N8x0 internet tablets
* Google Nexus One
* HTC Desire
* HTC HD2
* Google Nexus S
* Archos Gen7

Please visit those links in order to get more informations :

http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/MSMQSD
http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/Hummingbird
http://codex.xiaoka.com/wiki/meego:archos

A third list of potential support :
* Samsung GT-I9000 (see thread : http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=743)
* Samsung GT-I8320 (see thread : http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=253)
* Palm Treo (see thread : http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=722)
* Galaxy Tab (see thread : http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=2520)

If your device is not listed in this two lists, no developer has tried to port Meego into it. That does not mean that Meego will not be ported into it, it is highly unprobable. However, please mind that that porting is very difficult.

For example, most of the devices in the market are "closed" devices. Android devices have to be rooted in order to access to the device and flash other firmwares.
Then the hardware of the device may need drivers, specially for graphics acceleration ships. It might need many developement effort in order to port the linux kernel into the device.
Finally, many devices (like feature phones, or small smartphones) does not have the power to run Meego.

For more information, please visit this page from the Wiki :
http://wiki.meego.com/Devices/Unlisted_Handsets

Now, why Nokia will not update it's N97 / N97 midi / 5800XM / C6 / E7 to Meego ? It requires a lot of effort. Even for the N900, it is difficult for them because they have to adapt the OS to the hardware. Moreover, most of their devices (except recent S^3 devices) does not have hardware acceleration, and may do not have enough hardware capabilities to run Meego.
That might seems to be unfair for consumers from Nokia, but they simply do not have enough resources to do this. It is too gigantic work.

Finally, why Sony Ericson does not update it's X10 to Android 2.3, why HTC does not update it's HTC G1 (dream) to Android 2.1, why Galaxy and Galaxy Spica are abandoned by Samsung or Blackberry does not updates it's Storm to QMX (the playbook's OS) ? It is for the same reason.

Thanks for reading
And sorry for long post

So the focus of this thread's on "pure MeeGo" (aka MeR/Nemo etc) not Nokia's MeeGo? (Maemo6x)

NVM, I just noticed how old the OP is...
I was wondering why so much of the terminology is outed.

Galaxy Nexus also uses 4430 IIRC.
As does a new variant of of the SGSII.
