Default Meego on Asus eeePC 701 Surf

Hi, I just tried running Meego from a USB stick on an old first generation Asus eee 701 2G Surf [celeron processor, no SSE3, 2GB Flash based Drive and 512MB Ram]. It works really well anyway, except:
1. battery monitor claims there is no battery connected, though /proc/acpi/battery/state disagrees
2. When I try to connect to a WEP network with a hexadecimal key, it's as if I didn't try to connect at all. No error messages either - I just click 'OK' and it pretends I didn't just try to connect to a network.

The odd thing is that the wifi card is supported by the ath5k driver which shows up in lsmod. I can also scan successfully from the command line (iwlist wlan0 scan), just not connect since dhclient calls a script which errors out for some unrelated reason. Maybe the problem is that the network manager is assuming I'm entering a string and not a hex key?

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

I'm not sure about the wifi problem. I always enter my hex key. Could you file a bug about the battery monitor at http://bugs.meego.com?

MeeGo works on your EeePc 701? It doesn't work on mine... The kernel doesn't boot:
Quote:
This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:

Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
I gave up, because the MeeGo download site explicitly mentions "Intel Atom or Intel Core 2 CPU" as requirement. But if it works on your EeePc 701...

I have a EEEpc 900 Linux version (which is just a windows version with a larger SSD). Running MeeGo from a USB stick, it will boot into the GUI, chrome browser is working. Wifi is working (wpa). Webcam is working.
So far not working is the mediaplayer (lack of SSE3?). A couple of crashes did happen tho. Battery is nog recognised. Mail is not working properly (I was able to fill in my credentials, but now it won't start)
I've tried to send in a crash report, but that crashed too :-(

How did you get MeeGo to work with a 701, i thought it's just for Atom/C2D ?

I take back the problem with the wifi - for some odd reason the networks weren't showing up the first time I booted, but after a reboot everything was working as it should. The battery indicator isn't the biggest deal because when the battery a low, a hardware controlled orange LED flashes.

@cyberfux, @tijl: I wasn't expecting it to work on the 701 2G Surf (the lowest of the low 2GB device), but I gave it a go and it worked fine. I just downloaded the latest image for netbooks and boot from the usb stick I set up for the purpose - tada. Note that I haven't installed it to the drive yet, it's just running live off the USB stick. I'm not sure if I'd have to do some trimming to get it below 2GB... This might be interesting for somebody who wants a cheap device to mess with Meego, since used 701 2G Surf's are a dime a dozen.

You were right, it works from ive, but the installation hangs up at "Installing Bootloader"

wierd - seems like it shouldn't be too hard to fix though... (I would have installed it, but my wife prefers the Ubuntu version I have on it now, mainly because she has side scroll bars in Firefox but not in Meego's Chrome browser.)

I'll try again later, perhaps i can do some workaround - at least it's just grub, isn't it ;-)

For a real install, try preformatting the partition to btrfs...
