Default Interested in Pandaboard development?

I have been informed by Texas Instruments that they will soon be making some Pandaboards available FREE to community members who present interesting development proposals. There is no firm timeline yet but I am posting this to start you thinking about projects.

This can be a great opportunity for a few fast-acting MeeGo developers. The Pandaboards only cost $174 USD, but free is even better!

Note that TI is hard at work making this a truly open platform and there are exciting activities going on around it. I will share more details as they develop! Meanwhile, start imagining!

Are you talking about http://www.omappedia.org/wiki/PandaB...opter_Program?
Or a new program?

I've bought one, but why not a free one :-)

Looks like that program has expired. My understanding is that this was a special offer for the MeeGo community.

Thanks for the link!

That is the reason I ordered in the first place. After weeks waiting, it looks pretty good. Haven't tried MeeGo yet as no prebuilt image available, also not sure if SFX GL ES works with MeeGo.

TI is working hard on that prebuilt image: http://www.slideshare.net/menonnishanth/meego

Also, I received a reply back on the device offering and will be updating you all over the next few days!

For those who missed the email from Jay (TI), here are more details:

Quote:
Our intent is the following:
1. To provide boards that helps make MeeGo rock on ARM hardware (in our case OMAP
2. Enable meego community access to HW to do the necessary optimizations for ARM SoC's (in our case OMAP)
3. Enable innovation with MeeGo that is typically possible only with development platforms (e.g., multiple display support, boot from MMC, interfacing & integration to various sensors)

When the above happens we all will benefit from it.

Constraints (we prefer but not absolutely need to make this happen):
  • We would 'prefer' these board not be used for work that can be done on more available hardware e.g., MeeGo running on Netbooks. i.e., community council can factor if there is a need for these devices for the project.
  • If boards are not activitly being used by a developer we would 'enourage' developers to pass it onto someone else in the community who can make better use of these platform.
The boards that I plan to use for this activity are coming out of quota's allocated by TI to sponsor various PandaBoard community activities (including MeeGo). I might be able to find more boards if I can get TI marketing team to foot the bill (I havent had a discussion with them yet - but can do so based on the MeeGo community needs)

With the current plans - I might be able to provide (I can confirm the exact number within the next week):
  • 4-5 Boards in Dec 2010
  • 1 Board/month in 2011 (i.e., 12 boards)
In addition: I am planning having PandaBoard.org participate with key projects to collaborate for GSoc 2011. We can also explore other opportunities e.g., MeeGo 2011 Google Summer of Code projects that required ARM/OMAP hardware. I can certainly get board allocated for Mentors as well as students.. something to think about together.
Note that a requirement from our perspective is "MeeGo member in good standing". Whatever we determine that to mean.

Seems I am one of the few around here not from maemo and i dont have an n900....

EDIT: email sent to community and dev lists: http://lists.meego.com/pipermail/mee...er/002709.html. Engage!
