Default Diaspora

Looks like it might be time for MeeGo to get active with the Diaspora open social network group: http://www.helium.com/items/1953788-...en-source-code

Yeah, I remember your interest. I think we need a full project around this. Any other interested parties?

FYI, article on the subject: http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/features/...-bad-the-ugly/

I've been pretty hopeful about Diaspora, but then I read this comment on slashdot. Don't really know what to make of it...

We're not going to be running servers on our MeeGo netbooks/phones/whatever though. Provided servers are made available we "just" develop & run a client. It doesn't bother us about the dependencies of a FaceBook or Twitter server and we still have clients. The important part is that if we dislike whichever server we are using or they go bust we can get our data and move it somewhere else. Or am I missing something?

There do seem to be a number of open social network initiatives springing up hopefully one of them at least will get some traction.

Avery Morrow has published some of his first impressions, and after a while of playing around myself (at washington.joindiaspora.com), I can't comment much about the merits of Ruby on Rails & MongoDB vs PHP and MySQL, but testing was definitely a pleasure. And we're still talking pre-alpha.

Here are some open servers running diaspora, if you'd like to try it out for yourself:

openspora.com
trydiaspora.com
diasporahosting.eu
pivots.joindiaspora.com
washington.joindiaspora.com
tom.joindiaspora.com
mudoo.net
diaspora.gnagnaki.net
seedrally.com
sprout.loneblacksamurai.com
iaspora.xen.exoware.net
paceinvader.hashhou.se
dis.extrafuture.com
adams.joindiaspora.com
